For some reason, somewhere, someone decided to name this recipe………. white trash. The politically incorrect title spread like wildfire when even Alton Brown called his version “White Trash”. Alton is, however, a prophet in my eyes so I’ll let it slide this time.
A rose by any other name is still a rose, and re-naming this party mix certainly does not make it any less delicious. This recipe is insanely easy and will only take about 30 minutes or so – perfect for throwing together before a holiday gathering!
3 cups Cheerios Toasted Oat cereal
2 ½ cups Rice Chex
2 ½ cups Corn Chex
16 oz. M&M’s plain chocolate candy
2 cups salted mixed nuts
1 ½ cups small pretzels (I used stick pretzels and broke them all in half)
2 (11 oz.) packages white chocolate chips (Ghirardelli brand preferred)
Start by dumping all of the cereals, M&M’s, nuts, and pretzels in a very large bowl (a punch bowl works perfectly). Melt the white chocolate in a double boiler on very low heat, stirring often to avoid burning. Dump the melted chocolate over the rest of the ingredients and toss – make sure that all of it is evenly coated. Now, spread the whole messy pile out on a countertop (which you’ve already covered in parchment). After it’s evenly spread out, let it cool for about ten minutes then break up any big chunks.
If you’re making this ahead of time for a party this weekend, store it in zip-top bags or other air tight container. Otherwise, package it up in little gift boxes for friends, or keep the whole lot for yourself!
