WHITE TRASH PARTY MIX // hourglass & bloom

For some reason, somewhere, someone decided to name this recipe………. white trash. The politically incorrect title spread like wildfire when even Alton Brown called his version “White Trash”. Alton is, however, a prophet in my eyes so I’ll let it slide this time.

A rose by any other name is still a rose, and re-naming this party mix certainly does not make it any less delicious. This recipe is insanely easy and will only take about 30 minutes or so – perfect for throwing together before a holiday gathering!

You’ll need:

3 cups Cheerios Toasted Oat cereal

2 ½ cups Rice Chex

2 ½ cups Corn Chex

16 oz. M&M’s plain chocolate candy

2 cups salted mixed nuts

1 ½ cups small pretzels (I used stick pretzels and broke them all in half)

2 (11 oz.) packages white chocolate chips (Ghirardelli brand preferred)

Start by dumping all of the cereals, M&M’s, nuts, and pretzels in a very large bowl (a punch bowl works perfectly). Melt the white chocolate in a double boiler on very low heat, stirring often to avoid burning. Dump the melted chocolate over the rest of the ingredients and toss – make sure that all of it is evenly coated. Now, spread the whole messy pile out on a countertop (which you’ve already covered in parchment). After it’s evenly spread out, let it cool for about ten minutes then break up any big chunks.

If you’re making this ahead of time for a party this weekend, store it in zip-top bags or other air tight container. Otherwise, package it up in little gift boxes for friends, or keep the whole lot for yourself!

WHITE TRASH PARTY MIX // hourglass & bloom

Last night I went over to my parent’s house to do some good old fashioned holiday crafting with my mom. We sipped cocktails, ate take-out Italian, listened to Bing Crosby, and really got in the spirit of things! I had my heart set on making a peppermint serving tray, so while my mom perfected her party mix recipe, I got to unwrapping about a thousand peppermint candies. Okay, not a thousand. Maybe seventy-five.

After all the peppermints were unfurled from their individual wrapping, I set out to create a gorgeous pattern of candies on the baking sheet. The fantastic pattern I had in my mind, however, ended up looking a little like the continental United States (unintentionally). But never mind – into the oven it went! The little candies sloooooowly melted like wicked witches of the west, and in ten minutes out came a candy tray! Flat and shiny though it was, the shape of it was still looking a little funny, so I carefully rounded off a particular ugly corner with a hot knife.

Now, resembling something closer to a lovely oval shape, my pretty little tray can play host to a handful of fudgy treats and cookies! Or, wouldn’t it look especially festive under a few glasses of holiday bubbly? I think so!

–          Cheap peppermint candies

–          Parchment paper

–          Cookie sheet

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the candies in whichever pattern and shape that you choose. Keep the candies separated just a wee bit, about a quarter of an inch, as shown. Once the oven is heated and ready, carefully place the baking sheet in the oven and set a timer for 7-10 minutes. Once the 7 minute mark has passed, keep a very close eye on the candies. Once you feel that they have melted together evenly and formed one solid sheet, pull them from the oven. Set the tray on a wire cooling rack. After about 5 or so minutes, very carefully peel the parchment paper off the candy tray. Don’t be upset if not all the parchment comes off – no one will see it anyway! Now, let the candy tray itself cool on the wire rack for the next couple of hours. At the end it should be hard and shiny and smooth, not sticky.

Five more days! What sort of holiday projects and treats have you had your hands in lately? xo

You are the daughter of the sea, oregano’s first cousin.
Swimmer, your body is pure as the water;
cook, your blood is quick as the soil.
Everything you do is full of flowers, rich with the earth.

Your eyes go out toward the water, and the waves rise;
your hands go out to the earth and the seeds swell;
you know the deep essence of water and the earth,
conjoined in you like a formula for clay.

Naiad: cut your body into turquoise pieces,
they will bloom resurrected in the kitchen.
This is how you become everything that lives.

And so at last, you sleep, in the circle of my arms
that push back the shadows so that you can rest–
vegetables, seaweed, herbs: the foam of your dreams.

Hey. Guess what?

It’s my birthday.

Twenty-five candles on the (cheese)cake today, and a bottle of bubbly is patiently waiting in my fridge. But while I trudge on through my workday, I thought I’d give you all a festive little prize to keep the merriment going!

Let’s talk, for a moment, about hair.

Women have a very “special” relationship with our hair. Curly-haired girls want shiny straight locks, and girls with stick-straight tresses long for bouncing curls. Brunettes sit in salons with heads full of foil and chemicals, hoping for a sunkissed shade of blonde. Blondes think they have more fun.

It all goes round and round. But the one thing that remains constant is that no matter your hair type, you have to take good care of it. That’s why I was so utterly thrilled when Enjoy shipped their entire Hydrating System to me for a review! I have always known the Enjoy line is quality and have sworn by their deeply nourishing Hair Mask for years, but had yet to try out their other products. I have no idea what took me so long!

My hair is somewhere between normal to maybe a little oily, and has been dyed all shades of golden and auburn over the years. Being no stranger to foil and peroxide, my mane has certainly seen its days of damage. What I love so much about the Hydrating Shampoo and Hydrating Conditioner from Enjoy is that they completely normalize my hair. The shampoo cleanses without drying, nourishes without heaviness, and is gentle, pH balanced, and sulfate-free. The conditioner isn’t thick or heavy, but gives just the right amount of softness and shine.

Enjoy also sent me their Conditioning Spray. I used it like a light leave-in conditioner and detangler, spraying a little bit on my damp hair and then combing through. The Hydrating Conditioner also detangles, but I really like this option of adding a touch more nourishing hydration with the Conditioning Spray. It’s weightless and lovely.

Last, but not least, there was the Hair & Skin Treatment Oil. I am head-over-heels for this stuff. I want to carry it around with me in my pocket. I want to give it a name and its own stocking hung on the mantle. Okay okay, I jest. But it’s really quite amazing. It’s SO light, non-greasy, and versatile. Pour about a dime-size puddle in your palm and run it through damp or dry hair to block humidity, give instant shine, and eliminate frizz. I love that it makes dry ends feel instantly penetrated with moisture. No build up, no heavy greasy feeling. PLUS you can use it on elbows, cuticles, hands, feet – wherever your skin feels a little dry!
